If you followed the RTBMA / ETBMA post from last October, you know we've had big things in store for ETBMA 2018. Our Elite TBMAs are making a name for themselves, certainly on the Apptio Community and in the TBM Industry as well.

Individuals who hold Elite TBMA certification, are expected to be just that, Elite, the best of the best. An Elite TBMA not only has the technical skill to configure and troubleshoot Apptio, he or she has a value mindset - the ability to optimize a model and create an Apptio report, but also to find insights from that report and collaborate with the business to act upon those insights.

This year we've updated the ETBMA requirements for 2018 in both areas:

  • TBMA Business Skill
  • TBMA Technical Skill

Following are the details of each, as well as information about ETBMA 2018 Benefits.

TBMA Business Skills

This requirement is Identical for R11 & R12 ETBMA Candidates

New ETBMAs and ETBMAs upgrading their title from 2017, must complete this component.

2017 ETBMAs established themselves as thought leaders in the TBM space by creating a blog post from specific ETBMA prompts. The first Elite TBMAs documented a wealth of knowledge. You can check it out here TBMA Wall of Fame - ETBMA17.

In 2018 the ETBMA business skill component will be satisfied through a combination blog post and case study. The case study template is available here.  To complete the case study, each ETBMA candidate must share a real-world example that demonstrates the candidate understands the strategic objectives of his/her company, by outlining the activities completed and results obtained in one of the following areas:

  • Bridging the gap between business and technical requirements
  • Finding opportunities or insights from Apptio
  • Driving business value using Apptio
  • Onboarding new users
  • Effectively communicating with TBM Program stakeholders
  • Updating the Apptio model and/or allocations to meet a specific business need

As professionals, we don't always take the time to document or even reflect upon the way that our work directly contributes to our organization. The ETBMA Case Study provides that opportunity. The result will not only support your certification but provide another channel for your TBMO to publicize and celebrate it's value.

TBMA Technical Skills

This requirement has R11 and R12 Specific versions

R11

New ETBMAs need to complete

ETBMA17 title holders upgrading to ETBMA18 in R11, only need to complete the R11 Advanced scenario hands-on exam.

R11 Advanced scenario hands-on exam:

In this brief hands-on product examination, you'll be presented with 3 real-world scenarios testing your R11 skill in the following areas:

DataModelingReporting
  • NumberFormat()
  • Value Override function
  • Use If() to remove blank or small values that display in a report
  • Modify allocation database reference to include additional rows
  • Alter report component settings – titles, borders, color specs, alignment, fonts, sizing and others as necessary

R12

New ETBMAs and ETBMAs upgrading their title from 2017, must complete this component.

ETBMA17 title holders, see the upgrade paths for more detail on converting an R11 title to R12. For a graphical view, see the attachment to this post.

The ETBMA 2018 R12 technical examination includes an extensive set of scenario based challenges created with input from Apptio consultants and even a few 2017 ETBMAs. Candidates are presented with 20 exercises that are organized in a Concept and Activity format. The Concept explains the business case. The Activity provides detail related to the Apptio environment used in the exam. To solve each challenge, candidates must pull from their training and experience using Apptio to build or troubleshoot in the examination environment.
