How can I group my rows in a table in 11.7 and beyond?

Hi All,

As I was testing and getting myself familiar with the newest releases of Apptio, 11.7 and 11.8, I noticed a change in functionality that I wanted share with you.  In today's blogpost I'd like to explain the difference in behavior when you drag 2 fields into the Rows area of your Ad Hoc Configuration between pre- R11.7 versions and R11.7+.

In prior versions of Apptio when you dragged a secondary value into your Rows area for a table, Apptio would group those values by the value listed first.  As you can see Application Name (second value) is grouped by Application Family (first value).

Based on feedback from you, our customers, and our delivery teams, we have modified this behavior in releases 11.7 and 11.8. Now when you add two values to the Rows area, it places each value in it's own column as shown below, in the order they were added to the Rows area.

However we have not locked you out of the original capability.  If you'd still like to group your values, you can use the Subtotal option on the Data tab.  You simply tell Apptio what you'd like to subtotal by and in which order.   In the example below, I told Apptio to first subtotal by Application family, and Put subtotal labels in Application Name. This achieves the same results as the original behavior while offering additional flexibility to group by additional levels and specify where you want your subtotal labels to display.

Please feel free to share your feedback on this topic or let me know if there are other tips or topics you'd like covered.

Kind regards,

Deb
